Shomar Shabbos BSA Troop 226 chartered to the Teaneck Jewish Center shares this mission from our unique Jewish perspective. Our goals are to use the method of the BSA to help teach our young men life skills. This is done with the patrol method. With a patrol a group of young men can achieve there goal. Whether that be building a tower out of bamboo and rope, leading a hike by map and compass or preparing a meal for a large group. Each patrol has a leader and as assistant. This alone with the other scouts of the patrol form the basic unit of scouting. This is all over seen by the Scoutmaster, assistant scoutmaster and the senior patrol leader.
This is just the beginning. Each scout follows the scout Handbook which outlines in detail the skills needed fro each level of rank. He starts off as a scout learning the Law, Motto, Oath and some basic skills.Them he advances through the lower ranks: tenderfoot, second and first class. These involve learning many new skills, including first aid, knots, map and compass, outdoor camping and hiking. There is even a jewish award that can be earned called the Ner Tamid badge. Them as the scout gets older and has serviced in various troop positions he starts and the upper rank levels: Star, Life and finally Eagle. These ranks involve more self direction of the scout as there are Merit Badges to be earned. Some such as Citizenship, first aid, and personal management are required. And then there are many merit badges that give your sons the ability to be exposed and learn new skills: Communications, architecture, law, collecting canoeing, and art and 100 more!
